Building Code Development: From Amendment to Adoption

Friday, March 28, 2008, 1 p.m. (EDT)
Presented by Jeff Burton, AMD’s director of codes and standards

This introductory course discusses the process by which a successful code amendment navigates through the International Code Development Cycle and an overview of its adoption by state and other lower-tier government entities.

The code development cycle discussion focuses on the following:

  • ICC requirements for a code amendment and a proposed standard;
  • The codes and their code committees;
  • The code development hearings (includes discussion on S141 from February 2008 hearings; click here to read more about the hearings);
  • The final action hearings; and
  • The appeal process vs. publication.

The code adoption discussion focuses on the following:

  • What states adopt the building code?;
  • When do they update the code?;
  • Can amendments be made such as removal of new standards?; and
  • If a state adopts the code, do they enforce it?

The summary will focus on what this means to AMD member manufacturers and distributors and a brief synopsis of S141 as it stands and future implications on the day of the webinar.
