Lowes Adds Additional Distribution Center for Southeast

Lowe’s Companies Inc. recently announced plans for a new flatbed distribution center in Purvis, Miss. The company says the new facility will require an investment of approximately $15 million including land, construction and equipment. The location was selected based on Lamar County’s strong workforce, support at both the local and state level and proximity to the company’s growing store base in the Southeast. The flatbed center will supply products to more than 60 of the company’s retail locations in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida.

“Flatbed distribution centers play a vital role in the state-of-the-art distribution network that keeps Lowe’s stores supplied with the products our customers need,” says Mike Mabry, Lowe’s executive vice president of logistics and distribution.

The approximately 200,000-square-foot facility is situated on a 30-acre site. Construction has begun and the facility is expected to begin shipping operations in mid-2008. The facility will initially employ approximately 35 people.

The flatbed center will receive rail and truck shipments of large building materials from suppliers, which will then be loaded as customized orders on flatbed trucks.

“We are extremely proud that Lowe's has chosen Lamar County for its newest flatbed distribution site,” says Fred Hatten, president, Lamar County Board of Supervisors. “Lamar County has seen steady growth during the past several years and the addition of the distribution center is another indication that the corporate community has confidence in our region.”

Lowe’s currently operates 14 flatbed centers throughout the United States.
