See Sarah Susanka's So-Small Showhouse Live at IBS When more than 100,000 builders pour into Orlando, Fla., this January to attend the International Builders Show (IBS), some of the devastation wrought by four recent hurricanes will still be apparent. The lingering evidence will provide a persuasive introduction to "Building with SIPs at the So Small Showhouse" at the Outdoor Exhibits in front of Hall B, January 13-16, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Structural insulated panels (SIP) are strong, energy-efficient panels that have many builders reevaluating the way they build houses-especially in high-wind zones. The So Small Showhouse is built to withstand category 5 hurricane gales. Designed by architect and author Sarah Susanka, famous for her "not so big" houses and books, the So Small Showhouse will also serve as a platform for the myriad "behind the walls" products that have been chosen to function as a system within the energy-tight SIP envelope. Industry experts Mike Morley, Gary Katz and Mike Sloggatt will perform two shows daily that demonstrate the important differences builders will encounter when building wall and roof assemblies with SIP. During the two-hour show, attendees will learn about weatherization, window and door installation, siding and wiring. After each show, attendees will be invited to take a shuttle out to the completed Not So Big Showhouse, the Susanka-designed parent showhouse at Lake Nona. The SIP-constructed Not So Big Showhouse presents a multi-media learning experience, with audio-hosted tours focused on design, building science and green building.
